Melanoplus eurycercus is a member of the Green-legged Grasshopper complex (12 species), and often treated as a subspecies of M. viridipes. M. eurycercus occurs in north-eastern North America from southern Ontario to North Carolina (Map); usually in open woodlands, along forest edges, and old fields. Body length 17-26 mm. The pronotum is mainly black with a white lateral stripe; the wings are short, less than half of the abdomen. The forelegs and midlegs are yellowish-green; the rear legs are black with white bands. Adults are seen from May to mid-August. One generation per year.
